Waqf Law Change Will Benefit Women, but Warn of ‘Dangerous Narrative’: Sources

The claims that the government is using the Waqf law revision as a plot to takeover Waqf land are untrue, sources informed today in response to some statements made by the Muslim Law Board. According to insiders, the amendment’s goal is to give Muslim women and children—who have been harmed by it—more authority.

According to sources, certain Muslim clerics are constructing a “dangerous narrative” by making outrageous claims that Muslim land will be taken away.

In a statement today, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board said any change or alteration in Waqf Act “will not be tolerated”.

According to Dr SQR Ilyas, a representative for the Law Board, the government intends to revise the Waqf Act, 2013, by approximately forty points, “so their possession becomes easier,” changing the status and character of Waqf holdings.

According to him, Waqf holdings are “donations made by Muslim philanthropists dedicated to religious and charitable purposes,” and the Muslim Personal Law Board feels that this needs to be made clear. The Waqf Act was only passed by the government to control them.

He further said that Muslims would not be the only ones affected by this problem. It is feared that Sikh and Christian endowments would be the next number.

Citing the passage of the first Waqf Act in 1954, the first amendment in 1995, and then a report in 2013 stating that Muslim women and ordinary Muslims “are asking why the government is not changing present Waqf Act”

According to reports, once land is transferred to Waqf, it cannot be undone. That’s why the Waqf board has been taken over by prominent Muslims. “Children and mothers are in pain. According to authorities, a Muslim woman who gets divorced will not be granted any rights for herself or her children.

The two main components of the proposed amendment are allowing women to serve on Waqf boards for the first time and making sure that the land is confirmed before it is designated as Waqf property. The timing of its passage has not yet been determined, according to sources.
