President Droupadi Murmu will visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra on October 12 and during her visit she is expected to inaugurate the ₹15 crore skywalk and remodelled Parvati Bhawan.
This remodelling of the skywalk came after a stampede incident that happened on January 1,2022 in which at least 12 pilgrims were killed. The 200 metre skywalk is now extended to 50 metres.
After the stampede last year, the lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha had even constituted an investigation panel to look into the matter.
“The length of the skywalk was increased near the elevator of Sridhar Bhawan. Initially, it was planned that the corridor of the second floor shall be used. However, it was observed that the building was old and retrofitting was not advisable,” the official said.
The remodelled skywalk will now have 2.5 metre wide pedestrian flyover with 20 feet height above the existing track that will be an entry route for the pilgrims.
