No Changes Proposed In Existing Currency, RBI Clarifies

The Ministry of Finance confirmed the position of the RBI, making it clear that there is no plan to alter the current currency and banknotes.

Anto Antony, a member of Congress, had inquired as to whether the government had received any requests or representations calling for the addition of additional images, such as those of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, to Indian banknotes.

The Ministry of Finance acknowledged that numerous demands had been made for the inclusion of pictures of liberation fighters, notable people, deities, animals, etc. on Indian banknotes.

The Ministry further stated that there are no plans by the government to have Mahatma Gandhi’s likeness removed from Indian currency notes.

“Several requests and proposals have been made regarding images on money notes,” it continued. In this regard, the RBI clarified in a press release on June 6, 2022 that there is no proposal for changes to the current currency and banknotes.
