The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a cyclone, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday evening.
Iran has given the storm the name “Hamoon.”
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of the IMD, insisted that the storm will not significantly affect the Indian coast.
He did, however, caution that due to the storm, a few locations in coastal Odisha may see severe gusts and light to moderate rainfall.
According to the IMD, a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal strengthened into a cyclonic storm over the past six hours while moving north at a pace of 14 kmph.
According to the IMD, the system was around 230 km off the Odisha coast of Paradip at 5.30 pm, 360 km south of Digha in West Bengal, and 510 km southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh.
Within the next 12 hours, the storm is likely to become a severe cyclonic storm.
Cyclone Hamoon is forecast to cross Bangladesh’s coast somewhere between Khepupara and Chittagong, according to the weather service.
On October 25, at 12 p.m., the cyclone is forecast to reach ashore as a deep depression.
All district collectors in Odisha have been ordered to maintain their vigilance by the state administration.
In the case of a significant downpour, the state government has also instructed the administration to evacuate residents of low-lying districts.
By Tuesday morning, according to Mohapatra, the wind speed over the Bay of Bengal would gradually rise to 80-90 kmph with gusts to 100 kmph.
In the past 24 hours, Odisha has already experienced roughly 15 mm of rainfall as a result of the storm. According to the forecast, Monday and Tuesday could see a continuation of mild to moderate rain in coastal areas.
Fishermen have also been warned not to go into the west-central Bay of Bengal until Wednesday, as well as along and off the coast of Odisha and the north Bay of Bengal from Monday through Wednesday.
