Canada Withdraws 41 Diplomats From India Amid Tension Over Killing Of Sikh Leader

Canada has finally withdrawn its diplomats from India after the two countries failed to resolve the tensions in connection with the claims that India was involved in the alleged killing of a Canadian citizen.

Canadian Forein Minister Mélanie Joly said that the country has withdrew 41 out of 62 diplomats from India yesterday. The two countries were in continuous negotiations to decide about the diplomats.

According to the sources, Mélanie Joly had a secret meeting with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar last month in Washington. However, the two leaders could not come on any conclusion for the stay of Canadian diplomats in India.

Addressing a press conference Joly said that the diplomats have left India on Thursday.

“A unilateral revocation of diplomatic privilege and immunities is contrary to international law. It is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and threatening to do so is unreasonable and escalatory,” said the Canadian Foreign Minister.

Due to withdrawal of diplomats, Canada had suspended its operations at three consulates in India – Chandigarh, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Tensions between Canada and India emerged last month after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged India’s involvement in killing of Vancouver of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was a Sikh leader involved in a movement aiming at Sikh state in India.
