Bill To Rename India As ‘Bharat’ Likely To Be Tabled In Special Session Of Parliament

The government is expected to bring a resolution to rename India as simply Bharat in the upcoming Parliament session scheduled between 18 and 22 September. The Constitution already mentions “India, that is Bharat” but despite this it is going to be amended.

This comes after a growing demand to amend the Constitution to rename India as Bharat.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Supremo Mohan Bhagwat has welcomed the move as he has been always vocal about using “Bharat” and not India.

This move hints on what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had brought in light in his speech on Independence Day in 2022 from Red Fort. Mr Modi had asked people of the country to embrace its indigenous identity.

The special aircraft that is used to ferry Prime Minister, President and the Vice President has “Bharat” inscribed on it already.

In the recent Monsoon Session of Parliament, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal had expressed his demand to remove ‘India’ from the Constitution as it depicts colonial slavery and this move was then welcomed by other fellow MPs like Harnath Singh.

It is being speculated that a constitutional amendment bill is likely to be proposed in the special session of Parliament scheduled to be held on September 18.

However, the agenda for the session is yet not finalized but the chances for this bill to be tabled are very high.
