WHO Cautions Asia-Pacific Against Omicron, Asks To Strengthen Health Infrastructure

The World Health Organization has cautioned countries worldwide to strengthen their health infrastructure and to fully vaccinate their people for the possible rise in Covid-19 cases due to emergence of new Omicron variant despite impositions of travelling restrictions.

Even after closing borders for people coming from South African countries, Australia has lately became the country to report community transmission of Omicron, just a day after it was detected locally in five US states.

This cautioning to Asia-Pacific from the UN Health Agency came as the cases have started reporting in Asia this week. The countries where the cases are being reported include India, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore and Japan.

“People should not only rely on border measures,” said WHO regional director for the Western Pacific, Takeshi Kasai at virtual media briefing. “What is most important is to prepare for these variants with potential high transmissibility. So far the information available suggests we don’t have to change our approach.”

Though the vaccination rates vary but the difference is too large. Indonesia which was once Asia’s epicenter for Covid-19 has fully vaccinated only 35% of it’s population so far.

With countries imposing travel restrictions – Hong Kong, Norway, Russia, the Netherlands among others have declared new measures today. Malaysia has said that it will further tighten it’s grip against Covid-19.

Germany, which is Europe’s biggest economy said it would the unvaccinated from everything except essential businesses, and enactment to make vaccination compulsory would be drafted for early next year.

Though controversial but many countries including United States and Britain have been bringing decisions to give booster shots.
