US President Donald Trump is set to have lunch on Wednesday with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, according to the White House schedule.
Munir’s visit comes just weeks after a serious military clash between India and Pakistan in May, which followed a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that killed 26 people in April.
However, Munir faced protests right after arriving in Washington. Overseas Pakistanis and activists from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf heckled him at a hotel, chanting slogans like “Killers of Pakistanis” and “Killers of Islamabad.” Videos of the protests have been widely shared online, with demonstrators calling him a “mass murderer” and “dictator.”
Meanwhile, President Trump is focused on the tense situation between Israel and Iran. On Tuesday, he demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” on his social media platform, Truth Social, and met with his national security team. He claimed the US now has “complete control of the skies over Iran” and said they know where Iran’s Supreme Leader is hiding, warning that “our patience is wearing thin.”
Interestingly, Pakistan, with General Munir speaking in Washington, has expressed strong support for Iran and hopes the conflict will end soon.
The conflict escalated as Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, and Iran responded with attacks of its own. Trump has openly backed Israel and stressed that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
