What EC Says About Centre’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ Idea, Govt Terms It In National Interest

Responding to the questions whether the Election Commission was ready to conduct elections as per BJP’s proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the panel is “ready to conduct elections as per legal provisions”.

The idea of ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposes holding of simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies.

Talking to reporters in Bhopal regarding to preparations for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections Mr Kumar said, “Our work is to deliver the elections before time. That time has been stipulated in the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act.”

As per RP Act, elections can be declared six months before the completion of five-star tenure of government and a similar conditions exist for state Assemblies, he said.

“According to the legal procedures, the Constitution and RP Act, we have a mandate to conduct the election and we are ready,” said the CEC further.

The Central Government led by BJP on last Saturday prepared an eight-member high-level committee to look after and make guidelines for conducting the elections simultaneously for both Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
