Top Wrestlers Re-Appear At Jantar Mantar Demanding Arrest Of WFI Chief

Months after accusing Chief of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and other trainers for sexually harassing women wrestlers, top wrestlers including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat have again gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday to protest.

They have demanded that centre make public all the findings by the constituted oversight panel that investigated the allegations against WFI Chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The wrestlers even requested for an FIR to be filed against Brij Bhushan. However, the WFI Chief has denied allegations levelled against him.

Seven female wrestlers including one minor have filed complaints against Brij Bhushan on Friday but FIR is not yet filed, said the top wrestlers.

Mr Bhushan who has been serving as the WFI Chief for 12 years is has said that he will not be contesting the WFI elections scheduled to be held on May 7, but the wrestlers have refused to call off the protest and leave the site until the Chief is not arrested.

In the first week of April, the oversight panel led by legendary boxer Mary Kon had submitted its report over the issue. The wrestlers have expressed their frustration that despite the issuance of the report the government has yet not made it public.

“It’s been three months and we haven’t got justice. That’s why we are here again, to demand justice. We will sleep, eat here until we get justice,” said Vinesh Phogat.

He further said that the ministry of sports and officials from the committee are already not responding to their demands, the police has also denied permission to carry food and water to the protest sit.

In January, the top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia had appeared for the first time over the issue of harassment which had gone under investigation. Now after the release of report, they have re-appeared on Sunday.
