Top Mayor Post To Be Filled Today, AAP Accuses Lieutenant Governor Of Choosing Candidates In Favour Of BJP

Amid the ongoing scuffle between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, the next Mayor will be appointed today in Delhi. BJP which faced a big defeat in the MCD polls after three straight terms has asserted to win the post.

The ruling AAP has nominated Shelly Oberoi for the post, while BJP in his competition has fielded Shalimar Bagh councillor Rekha Gupta for the top post.

The ongoing scuffle between AAP and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena emerged after BJP councillor Satya Sharma was chosen as the presiding officer for the election and not the AAP’s nominated Mukesh Goyal.

The AAP supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accused Mr Saxena of trying to influence election and deliberately choosing those candidates who can help the civic body to tilt towards the BJP.

“It is the tradition that the senior most member of House is nominated as protem Speaker or presiding officer. But BJP is hell bent destroying all democratic traditions and Institutions,” Saurabh Bhardwaj, AAP MLA said in a tweet.

AAP has now appointed Mukesh Goyal as its Adarsh Nagar councillor, who is currently heading as the seniormost councillor in the new civic body.

Aam Aadmi Party led by Mr Kejriwal has won two consecutive terms in Delhi assembly polls and this time it even got a landslide victory in the MCD polls which the ended the 15-year rule of BJP. The party had based all its campaign over the issue of garbage and ended up having 134 wards.

BJP which had earlier denied that it will not contest for the Mayor post has now fielded its candidat saying that the post is an open race.

BJP had won 104 wards in the MCD polls concluded on December 7, 2022.
