This evening, sources claimed, the Union Cabinet had a significant meeting that was summoned on the opening day of the five-day special session of Parliament. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously stated that “historic decisions” would be made during this special session, there was speculation that the cabinet might approve anything from a change to the country’s name to a reservation for women or Other Backward Classes. After the meeting, there were hopes for clarity, but the tension persisted when the government skipped the expected briefing.
A number of significant meetings held in advance to the cabinet meeting, in addition to the PM’s remarks, had increased interest in it.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi met Home Minister Amit Shah. BJP chief JP Nadda was also present in the meeting. Mr Goyal and Mr Joshi are scheduled to meet PM Modi now.
The government provided the opposition with a list of eight measures that would be discussed during the special session during an all-party meeting on Sunday. The contentious election officer appointment law, which had previously been thought to be on the agenda, was shelved in the face of opposition complaints.
The discussion on the “Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – achievements, experiences, memories and learnings” was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha today. He remarked, “bidding goodbye to this building is an emotional moment” in reference to the Parliament moving to the new structure on Tuesday.
Referring from the times of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, PM Modi said that they have given new direction to the nation under their leadership and today is an occasion to highlight their achievements.
