Supreme Court Halts Deportation of Family to Pakistan, Seeks Document Verification

According to the news agency, the Supreme Court ordered authorities on Friday to hold off on taking coercive action against six family members who were accused of overstaying their visas until their identity documents were confirmed. This action might include deporting them to Pakistan.

Originally from Kashmir, the couple has a son who works in Bengaluru. In the wake of the terror assault in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, they could be deported. A bench made up of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh acknowledged the humanitarian nature of the case and permitted the family to get relief from the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in the event that they were unhappy with the results of the identification document verification procedure, according to the news agency.

Ahmed Tarek Butt and his five family members petitioned the Supreme Court, claiming that they were arrested and sent to the Wagah border for deportation to Pakistan even though they had legitimate Indian credentials. The bench noted that following the terror attack in Pahalgam, the Center had revoked Pakistani citizens’ visas on April 25 (with few exclusions listed in the ruling) and established a deadline for their deportation.

A total of 125 Pakistanis left India earlier on Wednesday through the Attari-Wagah border, making 911 Pakistanis have left the country in the last week. The news agency added that 15 Indian nationals on Pakistani visas entered Pakistan as well, bringing the total number of such departures to 23. However, the same border station in Amritsar, Punjab, allowed 152 Indian nationals and 73 Pakistani nationals with long-term Indian visas to enter India. With this, there are now 1,617 such listings for Indian nationals and 224 for Pakistani nationals overall.
