‘Stree 2’ Opening Day Success, Kapoor and Rao Break Shah Rukh Khan’s Long-Standing Record, Outclass Kumar’s Latest Release

From the first day of its release, the horror comedy Stree 2, starring actors Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, has broken records. The movie, which opened in theatres on August 15, is doing incredibly well at the box office and has established itself as one of the greatest advance bookings ever.

A day prior to its nationwide premiere on Thursday, Stree 2 had a few paid previews starting at 9:30 PM, which received a resounding response and broke box office records. The horror comedy shattered Shah Ruk Khan’s Chennai Express’s long-standing paid preview record, which stood at Rs 6.75cr nett in 2013. Based on early trade estimates, Stree 2 has become the highest-grossing movie, earning about Rs 8 crore.

Stree 2 has surpassed some of the largest films ever made in terms of advance ticket sales on the first day of release, so the paid preview is not the only record it has set. One day before to its general release on August 14, the national multiplex chains sold 3,92,000 tickets for the first day of Stree 2 (not including paid previews).

Regarding first-day advance reservations at national multiplexes, the movie easily defeated box office favourites including Salman Khan’s Tiger3, Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra, and Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan.

Stree 2 is sixth on the list of movies with the most advance bookings, behind movies like Jawan (5,57,000), Pathaan (5,56,000), KGF 2 Hindi (5,15,000), Animal (4,60,000), and War (4,10,000).

When it comes to the overall advance bookings, Stree 2 is on a rampage, selling 8,24, 483 tickets in single screens and multiplexes. The gross collection for the same stands at a whopping Rs 23.36 cr, as reported by news agency.

The fact that Stree 2 was able to dominate the box office despite facing two films starring A-list actors in a three-way competition is remarkable. With the debut of John Abraham’s action picture Vedaa and Akshay Kumar’s comedy Khel Khel Mein, Stree 2 had a dismal opening weekend for ticket sales for both films.

Khel Khel Mein sold only 28,000 tickets in national multiplex chains, but its total sales were 47,202, earning Rs 1.54 cr in revenue. Vedaa did poorly as well, with 61,040 in overall sales and 22,000 ticket sales in national chains. The actioner’s total ticket sales come to Rs 1.49 cr.

The industry anticipates that Stree 2 will take an opening of Rs 40 cr, and because paid previews have already brought in Rs 8 cr, the total revenue for the first day may perhaps exceed Rs 50 cr. The opening budgets for Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein are estimated to be between Rs 5-7 cr.
