According to preliminary figures given by ComScore, the Shah Rukh Khan-led movie “Jawan” earned $62.7 million globally over the course of the last weekend, moving it into second place behind “The Nun II” ($85.3 million) in terms of global box office receipts.
According to ComScore, “The Equalizer 3,” starring Denzel Washington, came in third with $23.6 million.
The Sept. 7 release of “Jawan,” which stars Khan in a dual role as a father and son who want to end corruption in Indian society, broke the actor’s own Bollywood opening day record. According to figures from the producer Red Chillies Entertainment, the Hindi-language version brought in $9.4 million in India, with an additional $1.3 million from Tamil and Telugu-language dubbed versions. The previous record-holder for a Hindi-language movie was Khan’s “Pathaan,” which debuted in January and made $12.7 million globally on its first day of release after earning $8.32 million in India and an additional $4.5 million in other markets.
According to ComScore data, “Jawan” had the fourth-highest opening weekend gross in the United States with $6.2 million. It made $29.5 million in India, making it the top-grossing movie there.
Behind “Pathaan” ($130 million), “Gadar 2” with Sunny Deol ($81 million), and “Jailer” with Rajinikanth ($76.6 million), “Jawan” is the fourth-highest-grossing Indian movie of the year.
There are no significant releases planned very soon, thus “Jawan” seems destined to keep up its momentum in India.
However, “Jawan” could not beat the Imax format record set by “Pathaan.” With $2.4 million of worldwide Imax box office “Jawan” became the format’s second-best global opening weekend for an Indian title after “Pathaan.” Within India, “Jawan” earned $820,000 from 26 screens, Imax’s second-best opening weekend ever in the market for an Indian title and its fifth best opening weekend for any title. In North America, “Jawan” scored $1.1 million of Imax box office, which is that market’s third best opening weekend for an Indian film.
