Sonia Gandhi Unites Strong Opposition Against NDA To Draw Out Strategy For 2024 elections

Sonia Gandhi met with opposition leaders on Friday, including Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and MK Stalin of Tamil Nadu, to devise a strategy to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Mamata, Pawar, and Stalin, according to a report by news agency, accepted Sonia’s invitation to the virtual meeting. The conference was also attended by Maharashtra Chairman Minister and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, who was once considered a close ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The opposition parties are attempting to establish a “unlikely coalition” against a “common enemy” after the BJP was thrashed by the TMC in the West Bengal assembly elections of 2021. During the just finished Monsoon session of Parliament, the opposition, lead by the Congress, banded together against the Centre and attacked it over the Pegasus snooping scandal, farm legislation, and other concerns.

Opposition politicians carried banners and posters calling for the repeal of farm laws and decrying the “death of democracy.” Rahul Gandhi, who was leading the protest, claimed that, “we have to come out here to speak to the press as we in Opposition are not allowed to speak in the Parliament. This is a murder of democracy”.

Meanwhile, Sonia’s opposition meeting comes just days after senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, one of the party’s most outspoken critics, hosted a dinner attended by 45 representatives from 15 different parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), National Conference, and Akali Dal.

The opposition leaders stated after Sibal’s meeting that they did not talk politics. The major aim of the meeting, according to reports, was to unite the opposition in order to defeat PM Modi’s NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. They went on to say that the opposition leaders addressed the upcoming assembly elections in five states, as well as methods to prevent the BJP from gaining power, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

“While Omar Abdullah questioned what steps were being taken to strengthen the Congress and stated that whenever the Congress is strong, the opposition becomes stronger, Sharad Pawar extended support to the G-23 leaders and said that we are with you in terms of whatever you are doing inside and outside your party,” news agency sources as saying.

According to the sources, a number of opposition politicians have raised the problem of “no leadership in the Congress party” when asked if they are willing to extend their support on a national level.

“On the one hand, TMC leader Derek O’ Brien remarked, the Congress fights TMC in West Bengal, while on the other side, the party wants TMC to join them in the centre. There are situations in which we feel we can align with Congress, but whom should we talk to?” a BJP leader remarked, according to sources, referring to the party’s ambiguous leadership.

“YSR representative also said they are ready to forget the things in the past for the betterment of the country. Even Shiromani Akali Dal MP Naresh Gujral said his party can be united on the farmer’s issue,” they also noted.
