Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday announced a 29-member Punjab election committee for the upcoming assembly elections after so much of delay and drama in the state party. Punjab Congress has also appointed presidents and working presidents for all the district committees in the state.
The poll committee of the party, will have Navjot Singh Sidhu as it’s chief and the state Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as a member, the committee will shortlist the candidates. The other members who are the part of the committee include MP Pratap Singh Bajwa, former state unit chief Sunil Jakhar, Rajya Sabha member Ambika Soni, all lawmakers of the party from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and all the ministers from the state government.
The other members who are in the committee include former state party chiefs HS Hanspal and Mohinder Singh Kaypee, former chief minister Rajinder Amla, senior vice president of state unit Laal Singh, MLA Raminder Amla, Congress secretary KL Sharma and state working presidents Kuljit Nagra, Sukhvinder Danny and Pawan Goel.
Punjab Congress vice president Gurpreet Kangar, MLAs Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Ajaib Singh Bhatti, Rana Sodhi, Shyam Sunder Arora and Navtej Cheema will also be the part of the committee with Hamid Masih, Punjab Mahila Congress chief Balbir Rani Sodhi, state SC department chairman Raj Kumar Chhabewal, Punjab NSU president Akshay Sharma, state youth president Barinder Dhillon and chief organiser of Punjab Seva Dal Nirmal Kaira.
According to the Constitution of Congress, the state presidents leads the state election committees.
The party president has appointed total of 35 district working presidents.
This announcement of the formation of the election committee and finalisation of its members has come after much delays and drama within the party
Sources have said that changes have been proposed in the original list by the state unit chief.
