SII got orders of 26 crore doses from GoI, says Poonawalla

Amid the vaccine crisis and questions over the orders placed by the government the Chief of Serum Institute of India Mr Adar Poonawalla on Monday told that total 26 crore vaccine doses has been ordered by the government so far.

SII is the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world and is currently manufacturing Covidshield developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca. Currently two vaccines are being manufactured in India — one is Covidshield and another Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

“As of today, we received total orders of over 26 crore doses of which we supplied more than 15 crore doses. We have also got 100 per cent advance of Rs 1,732.50 crore by GoI for the next tranche of 11 crore doses in the next few months. Another 11 crore doses would be supplied in the second channel for states and private hospitals in the next few months,” said the SII chief in his statement.
