Shashi Tharoor And Mallikarjun Kharge On Tight Run As Party Elects Its Non-Gandhi Chief Today

Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor are on face off today as Congress in more than 20 years is electing it’s first non-Gandhi party president.

Both the candidates have reiterated the non-involvement of the Gandhis. However, Mr Tharoor has opened up about the irregularities of – “difference in treatment”, “uneven playing field” and “bias”.

When he visited the states for his campaigning he found the chiefs were not available, but state party chief and legislature “welcome Mallikarjun Kharge, sit with him… I am not complaining, but do you not see a difference in treatment?”, he said while speaking to media.

Meanwhile, Mr Kharge has expressed will in “collective decision making” and would like to have “guidance” from the Gandhis. “They have done good for this country. Their advice will benefit the party… so I will definitely seek their advice and support. There is no shame in it,” he said.

Mallikarjun Kharge had filed his nomination for the post at eleventh hour following the nudges from the Central leaders after Rajasthan Chief Minister who was initially the front runner-up changed his decision.

The elections are being held three years after Mr Gandhi ventured down from the top post after the second consecutive political race rout of the Congress in 2019. The 52-year-old, who is presently driving the party’s “Bharat Jodo” yatra, has solidly would not return as president in spite of unrelenting force from a segment of leaders.

In August 2019, Mrs Sonia Gandhi had step down from her party responsibilities was persuaded to comeback as the party’s interim chief. Following party’s multiple defeats, calls for revamping party were made by many leaders including Group of 27 to which Mr Tharoor belonged.

More than 9,000 leaders from state Congress Committee are likely to vote today in the sixth election after the independence in the 137 year-old party.
