Schools, Colleges To Remain Shut In Kozhikode As Nipah Spreads, Over 1000 In Contact List

Covid like situation has again hit Kerala’s Kozhikode as all educational institutions will remain shut till next Sunday (September 24) in the wake of Nipah virus outbreak. These educational institutions include, schools, colleges and coaching centres. However, it has been ordered that the online classes are regularly conducted throughout the week, said the administration.

This is the fourth outbreak of Nipah virus in the district since 2018 when first outbreak was reported.

Currently there are 1,080 people in the contact list, out of which 130 have been reported today and 327 in the list are health workers, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George.

The Health Minister also said that the numbers in contact list are likely to increase further as the test result of the patient died on August 30 has come out as positive. So far, total six positive cases of Nipah virus have been reported in state.

Around 17 people who attended the cremation of the man who died on August 30 have been isolated.

The hospitals treating Nipah patients have been asked by the district collector to form a medical board to meet twice a day and submit report to the health department.
