SC Grants Bail To AAP MP Sanjay Singh In Delhi Excise Policy Scam, Leader Walks Out Of Tihar Jail

Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP for the Aam Aadmi Party, left Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Wednesday night, one day after being granted bail in the liquor scam case.

In a money laundering case involving the Delhi excise policy scandal, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh after the Enforcement Directorate stated it had no concerns. Singh was released from the hospital today after being treated on Tuesday due to a liver-related condition.

Addressing his supporters outside the Tihar Jail, the AAP leader said, “Jashn manane ka waqt nahi aya hai, sangharsh ka waqt hai’…Our party’s senior leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia are being kept behind bars. I have confidence that the locks of the jail will break and they will come out…”

Singh also visited Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s home after the release to see Sunita Kejriwal, his wife. In relation to the now-canceled excise policy case, the Delhi Chief Minister is being held at Tihar Jail.

The AAP leader’s father Dinesh Singh called son’s release from the jail a “special moment”. “Me, my family, party workers & the party see this as a special moment…,” he said.

Sanjay Singh further said that the AAP was born out of a movement and it is not afraid of anyone. “Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain were sent to jail, why? What is their crime? Their crime is that they want to give good education to 2 crore people of Delhi, want to send the elderly on pilgrimage, want to give free water. Every worker, every leader, every minister and MLA of AAP is standing with their leader Arvind Kejriwal.”

On October 4, 2023, the AAP leader was taken into custody during an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on his residence in relation to a money laundering case involving the Delhi excise policy.

Singh was intimately linked to other accused or suspects in this case, including businessmen Dinesh Arora and Amit Arora, according to the ED, which said that Singh was a major conspirator in the alleged scheme and collected Rs 2 crore in proceeds of crime.

The government inquiry agency further asserted that the AAP leader had participated in a plot with others and had received illicit funds or kickbacks from the liquor policy (2021–2022) fraud.

AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “Sanjay Singh has just come out of the jail and thousands of party workers welcomed him…He (Sanjay Singh) said that this is not the time to celebrate but struggle. Three of our top leaders- Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia & Satyendar Jain are still in jail. Until & unless they are released we will not celebrate we will keep on struggling…”

Delhi Minister Atishi said that the “truth has triumphed”. “For the last two years, they have been investigating this fake liquor policy case. ED conducted several raids but still, they could not find corruption money from AAP leaders…,” she added.

AAP leader Jasmine Shah said Singh’s release proves that there is no money trail as alleged by the ED in the case.

“Sanjay Singh is AAP’s lion…BJP put him behind bars in a false case & no money trail was found. Supreme Court said that this is a false case & a plan to finish AAP. Sanjay Singh being released proves that there is no money trail…The struggle will continue…,” he said.
