External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday had a “frank conversation” with his Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer on ties between the two nations.
The meeting between the two leaders in Kampala city came amid an unease in the bilateral ties between the two nations.
Mr Jaishankar has visited Kampala to represent India for the two-day summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) beginning today.
“Met Maldives FM @MoosaZameer today in Kampala. A frank conversation on India-Maldives ties. Also discussed NAM related issues,” said Mr Jaishankar taking to his X handle.
Maldivian foreign minister Mr Zameer also took to his X handle and expressed his pleasure to meet the Indian External Affairs minister on the occasion of NAM Summit.
“We exchanged views on the ongoing high-level discussions on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, as well as expediting the completion of ongoing development projects in the Maldives, and cooperation within SAARC and NAM,” he said.
Posting a photograph of the meeting Mr Zameer also said, “we are committed to further strengthening and expanding our cooperation”.country
The two countries’ ties came under unease after the Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said that he will fulfil his poll promise that Indian military personnel evicted from his country.
Massive controversy erupted on social media earlier in the month following a minister and some other leaders from Maldivian government used derogatory remarks against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he shared a video of him on the Pristine beach of Lakshadweep.
