Refusal to Switch Seat With BJP MLA Leads to Assault on Vande Bharat Passenger

A passenger on the Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat train was reportedly beaten up after he refused to give up his seat to a BJP MLA. The incident happened last Thursday when Rajeev Singh, a BJP legislator from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, was traveling with his wife and son.

Mr. Singh had a seat at the back of the train compartment, while his family sat in the front near the man who refused to switch seats. The situation got worse when some men, believed to be linked to Mr. Singh, boarded the train at Jhansi station and attacked the passenger who was headed to Bhopal.

A video circulating online shows about six men punching the passenger while he stayed in his seat. Some of them were even hitting him with slippers. The video shows the man bleeding from his nose and his clothes soaked with blood.

Jhansi’s Railway Superintendent of Police, Vipul Kumar Srivastava, confirmed that the fight started over the seat issue. He said they will take proper action after reviewing CCTV footage.

The Government Railway Police in Jhansi registered a non-cognizable report after receiving a complaint from Mr. Singh. In his complaint, Mr. Singh claimed that a co-passenger acted indecently toward his wife and son. When he objected, the man misbehaved with his family and later called others at Jhansi station, who also used abusive language.
