Rahul Gandhi Slams Kejriwal, Draws Parallels with PM Modi in Fresh Attack

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, attacked former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday, January 14, 2025, during his first public appearance in Delhi before the February 5 Assembly election. He accused Kejriwal of “rising corruption and pollution” in the capital. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha compared Mr. Kejriwal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused both of making “false promises” to the public while addressing supporters in Seelampur, northeast Delhi, which saw communal riots in February 2020 that resulted in 53 fatalities and over 700 injuries.

“Do you remember how Delhi was when Kejriwal came to power? He said he will remove corruption. But what has actually happened? Pollution and inflation have kept increasing,” said the Congress leader at his ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ event. He added, “Just like Modiji, he keeps making false promises one after the other. There is no difference between them at all.”

It was his first election event in the capital since the 2024 Lok Sabha election, where Mr. Gandhi had campaigned for candidates from both parties and the Congress and AAP, allies in the INDIA alliance, fought together in a 4-3 seat-sharing arrangement. The Congress and the AAP, meanwhile, are battling the Assembly election independently. In response to Mr. Gandhi’s comments, the AAP chief, in a post on X, said, “Today Rahul Gandhi came to Delhi. He abused me a lot. But I will not comment on his statements. His fight is to save the Congress. Mine is to save the country.”

Mr. Gandhi declared that a caste survey would be carried out in the nation’s capital if the Congress won the election. The former chief minister was then challenged to explain his position on the caste census and the call to lift the 50% reservation quota. “We want participation and respect for everyone. We want even the poorest of the poor, be it a Dalit person or someone from the backward classes, and people of all faiths to be able to see big dreams,” he said.

He accused Mr. Modi and Mr. Kejriwal of serving “a few billionaires” and blamed them for the growing inflation. “Inflation is at its highest point. The wealthiest are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Narendra Modi is marketed by [Industrilist Mukesh] Ambani and [Gautam] Adani. Have you ever heard anything about them from Modi or Kejriwal? The Rae Bareli MP stated, “The country is not just for a few billionaires.” He urged voters to support the Congress, claiming that the party will guarantee the city’s growth, just as it had during the Sheila Dikshit administration’s 15-year rule.
