Public Outrage as Maharashtra Govt Hosts Opulent Event with Silver Dinnerware, Costly Meals

A recent celebration in Mumbai marking the platinum jubilee of Parliament’s Estimates Committee has stirred up controversy. The Maharashtra Congress and several activists are accusing the state government of wasting public money on an over-the-top event, even though the state is facing serious financial issues.

The two-day gathering, held at Mumbai’s Vidhan Bhavan and kicked off by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, hosted about 600 people from across India. What’s raising eyebrows is the claim that meals were served on rented silver plates, each costing Rs 550, with food worth Rs 5,000 per person.

Vijay Wadettiwar from the Maharashtra Congress criticized the spending, questioning why such luxury was necessary when the state is struggling financially. He pointed out that farmers are being denied loan waivers, bonuses aren’t being paid, and funds for welfare schemes have been slashed yet, this kind of lavish hospitality was seen as a priority. Harshwardhan Sapkal, another Congress leader, also questioned the government’s choices, even wondering whether the money used was linked to a separate cash-related issue in Dhule during a committee tour.

Activist Kumbhar added fuel to the fire by claiming the total bill for the 600 guests came to about Rs 27 lakh. He called the event a clear case of public money being misused, criticizing the fancy setting that included luxury hotel stays, red carpets, air-conditioned tents, chandeliers, and massive banners.

He accused the committee members, who are supposed to keep a close eye on government spending of doing the exact opposite. “They’re preaching frugality but acting like royalty,” he said in a strongly worded post on X. However, some sources told that the plates weren’t actually silver but only silver-coated, and the meal cost per person was reportedly less than Rs 4,000, not the amount being claimed. So far, the state legislature hasn’t made any official statement.
