The Lok Sabha is likely see a storm today over two contentious bills that will extend the tenure of directors of both Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). While, in Rajya Sabha, MPs from opposition have announced to sit on dharna against the suspension of their twelve MPs from the Winter Session of Parliament.
The Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh had last week introduced two bills — The Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill 2021 and Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill 2021. Both of these bills will be passed today despite the Opposition opposing for them.
The Opposition has been calling the bills undemocratic and saying that the government has brought these bills with its ‘malafide intention’. Congress and TMC includes the Opposition that will oppose the extension of the tenures for five years. About 24 MPs from Opposition have already moved statutory resolutions on the bills.
Congress leader Randeep Surjewala had already moved the Supreme Court against the two bills. However, the government has been saying that the tenure at five years is a ‘streamlining measure’.
The ruling government BJP has good numbers in the lower house, so the bills are likely to be passed despite opposition. Heavy arguments, even walkouts and protests by the opposition are likely to be seen in the Lok Sabha today.
Meanwhile, in Rajya Sabha, the Opposition leaders will sit on protests near the Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex today against the suspension of twelve MPs from the Winter Session for their ‘unruly’ behaviour in the previous session.
“Tomorrow all Opposition MPs of Rajya Sabha will sit in front of the Gandhi statue for the entire day in solidarity with the 12 MPs suspended for the entire session in violation of the Constitution and Rules of Procedure,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.
