Prashant Kishor Proposes Formation Of Council To Decide Congress Membership

Congress is close to deciding on Prashant Kishor’s membership and position in the organisation, which comes in response to the election strategist’s request for a “national role” and “a part” in the party’s decision-making.

According to well-placed Congress insiders, Kishor has proposed that the party’s leadership form a special advisory council, chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi, to make political choices. The panel will be a “compact body” that will discuss and finalise ideas for political moves, such as alliances, plans, and campaigns.

The panel will send the suggestions to the party’s highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee, which is a larger group with representation from all regions and communities, for further consideration and approval after completing the necessary groundwork.

The suggestion is that select party leaders besides Kishor be part of this panel, it is learnt. A senior official stated, “He wants a national role, and is not hooked on the usual sought-after designations like AICC general secretary.” The job of AICC general secretary remains the top organisational position in Congress, which means it might be a potential perch for the high profile poll strategist.

Insiders believe Congress will undergo an organisational revamp in the coming months, which will entail new nominations and the formation of new panels.

The special panel, on the other hand, will be the focus as the Congress chief moves closer a final decision. A source said, “A decision can be taken any time. The negotiations and the in-house deliberations have been on for over one and half months now.”

After serving as the Trinamool Congress’ election manager and assisting Mamata Banerjee’s party in fending off an intensive BJP campaign in the West Bengal assembly elections and winning a third term, Kishor began talks with the Congress leadership about joining the party. He’s also put out a suggestion for reorganising the Congress’ grassroots to help it resurge.

Kishor’s candidacy has been strengthened by the support of major satraps who have high regard for his abilities, with some of them having collaborated with him in election management. A top functionary added, “He is seen as a good input to the party and he was told to join without any conditions.”
