Political Turmoil in South Korea as Lawmakers Impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol

Following the declaration of martial law, which sparked widespread indignation and a constitutional crisis, South Korean lawmakers suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol from office and impeached him for his attempt to impose martial law. A parliament livestream revealed that lawmakers voted on a proposal to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office. Under the constitution, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will be the interim leader.

The Constitutional Court will now determine whether to remove him or reinstall him. Up to six months may pass during this time.

President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law on December 3rd, and troops were dispatched to the National Assembly. According to the officer in charge of the soldiers, they were told to forcibly remove MPs in order to prevent them from obtaining the 150 votes required to reverse the law.
