Political Showdown Looms as PM Modi Prepares for Constitution Debate Rebuttal

On Saturday, December 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond to the Lok Sabha’s discussion of India’s constitution. A two-day debate on “Discussion on the Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India” was launched by the Lok Sabha on Friday in observance of the start of the 75th year since its adoption.

On the first day of the Constitution debate, the opposition and treasury benches engaged in heated arguments. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accused the Congress of consistently prioritising power over the Constitution, while Priyanka Gandhi, in her first speech, accused the BJP government of violating the Constitution’s “suraksha kavach.”

At 11 a.m., Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to begin the Lok Sabha’s discussion on the Constitution’s 75th anniversary. Rajnath Singh started a discussion about the Constitution in the Lok Sabha, concentrating on its historical significance and how it shaped the country’s governance and international reputation.

According to the defence minister, the Congress has purposefully ignored the contributions of a number of leaders in an attempt to portray the Constitution as its own creation. Rajnath Singh discussed recent attempts to politicise the Constitution’s legacy, emphasised how it reflected India’s civilisational ideals, and reflected on the lengthy discussions that led to its creation.

“There has always been an attempt by a particular party to hijack the work of Constitution making…Today I want to make it clear, that our Constitution is not the gift of a single party. The Constitution of India was made by the people of India, in accordance with the values of India…Our government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working with the spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas, our government is working in accordance with the Dharma written in the Constitution of India. Our Constitution is progressive, inclusive, transformative… This is our country where a person born in a poor family can also become the Prime Minister of the country and he can also become the President of the country,” said Rajnath Singh.

Priyanka Gandhi, a Wayanad MP, lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi at her debut speech in the Lok Sabha, claiming that he has failed to grasp that it is “Bharat ka Samvidhan” rather than “Sangh ka Vidhan.” Union Minister Rajnath Singh came under fire from Priyanka Gandhi, who said the ruling party was concentrating on the past rather than what they were doing for the nation at the moment. Priyanka Gandhi said the country has never stayed in the “hands of cowards for long”.

In the guests’ gallery were Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi, her husband Robert Vadra, and their son Raihan. On November 25, the winter Parliament’s first session began, but because of interruptions, both Houses were adjourned somewhat early. The winter session is scheduled to conclude on December 20.
