On his visit to poll-bound Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Saryu Nahar National Project, in a move to support farmers.
As per the release by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the 6,623 kilometer long canal will help in irrigation of more than 14 lakh hectares of land that will benefit 29 lakh farmers of 9 districts –Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Bahraich and Basti.
However, the project had already been started back in 1978, but it couldn’t be completed due to lack of financial support, adequate supervision and interdepartmental coordination, said the PMO.
The project is now completed after PM Modi’s administration took measures to complete it, said PMO release. Out of the total project worth ₹9,800 crore, over ₹4,900 crore were spend in last four years.
“A project that was incomplete for four decades has been finished in four years,” said PM Modi in a tweet.
