PM Modi Offers Warm Wishes to Muhammad Yunus Following His Appointment as Bangladesh’s Interim Leader

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Muhammad Yunus, the laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, well on his assumption of leadership of Bangladesh’s provisional administration.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s dedication to collaborating with Bangladesh while emphasising the necessity of guaranteeing the security of the nation’s Hindu and other minority populations.

“My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development,” the PM said.

Following the violent revolt that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government, minorities in the Islamic nation have come under attack, with Hindus being the target of particular violence.

Muhammad Yunus, 84, arrived back in Bangladesh earlier in the day after receiving medical attention in Paris. He took the oath of office as the leader of the nation’s caretaker administration that evening.

Student protestors who spearheaded the demonstrations against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina—which caused her to flee the nation and toppled her Awami League government—recommended the renowned economist for the position.

Yunus will head the interim government’s advisory council, which would be in charge of organising new elections in Bangladesh.
