The announcement of a Global South Center of Excellence, a Global South Science & Technology initiative, a project to provide basic medical supplies, and Global South Scholarships for students from developing nations on Friday was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasised that India’s strategy in its development partnerships has been “consultative, outcome oriented, demand driven, people-centric, and respectful of the sovereignty of partner countries.”
The flurry of announcements came at the Voice of Global South virtual summit, which India was in charge of organising.
I truly believe that countries of the Global South have a lot to learn from each other’s development experiences, the Prime Minister stated during the Voice of Global South summit’s closing session.
In announcing that India would create a Global South Center of Excellence, he stated that this organisation would conduct research on development strategies or best practises from any of these nations that could be scaled up and applied in other Global South nations.
He cited the digital public goods produced by India in the areas of electronic payments, health, education, and e-governance as an illustration of how many other developing nations may benefit from them.
