Opposition Takes Dig On Bommai Govt Over Foxconn Investment

Opposition parties Sunday took a dig at Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai over what they said were ‘publicity stunts’, and advised him to tread carefully when it came to investments in the state after reports said Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn Foxconn had denied finalising any agreements in India.

The Karnataka Government stated that it had a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Foxconn and was finalizing all the investment’s specifics.

Foxconn is a publicly traded business, so Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner of the Department of Industries and Commerce, explained that the company can only make official announcements with the board’s approval. She added that the government was in contact with the business to finalize the agreement and stated that she hoped for it to be operational in 12 to 14 months.

After meeting the company’s chairman Young Liu on Friday, Bommai and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Dr. C N Ashwath Narayan stated Foxconn had signed an agreement to establish a new iPhone manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.

After extensive discussion with the company’s C’man Young Liu, an agreement was made with Foxconn, a major electronics manufacturer, to make a significant investment in the state. It is anticipated to generate 1 lakh new employment. land allocated for 300 acres close Bengaluru International Airport. We’ll create the friendliest atmosphere for Foxconn,” Bommai had tweeted following the meeting.

Apple phones will shortly be made in the state, Bommai had previously stated in another tweet. Along with about 100,000 new jobs, Karnataka will gain a ton of new possibilities. We will contribute to making India a $5 trillion economy by 2025 under the inspiring guidance of Hon’ble PM @narendramodi-ji.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, the general secretary of the AICC, accused the chief minister of Karnataka of lying to the state’s citizens following reports of Foxconn’s denial and requested a public apology on Sunday. “Bommai’s claim of Foxconn signing an agreement with Bommai government to manufacture Apple iPhones and creating 1,00,000 jobs are “an exercise in fakery,” Surjewala said and added the agreement was “probably cancelled because they didn’t pay 40% commission”.

Bommai was questioned about whether or not he was “misleading the people of Karnataka” by Congress politician and former IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge. “Why would the CM put such an honorable expenditure in jeopardy by pulling a publicity stunt? The majority of investors favor confidentiality until contracts are signed, he said in a tweet.

H D Kumaraswamy, a former chief minister, also made fun of the BJP administration, saying it had a strategy of “more publicity, zero results.” By saying that Foxconn had agreed to invest in the state, Kumaraswamy claimed that Bommai and two of his ministers received free exposure. They held up some documents as they posed for the cameras. However, Foxconn had made it clear in Taipei, Taiwan, that there had not yet been a firm decision to engage in Karnataka.

He questioned, “Was it an agreement or a publicity gimmick?” and added that Ola recently invested Rs 7,614 crore in Tamil Nadu as a result of the government’s mistakes.
