NITI Aayog CEO Announces India as World’s Fourth-Largest Economy, Overtaking Japan

BVR Subrahmanyam, the CEO of NITI Aayog, announced on Saturday that India’s economy had surpassed Japan to become the fourth largest in the world. Following the 10th meeting of Niti Aayog’s Governing Council, Mr. Subrahmanyam briefed reporters, stating that India benefits from a generally favourable geopolitical and economic climate.

“We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy as I speak,” he said. Mr. Subrahmanyam stated that India is now bigger than Japan, citing IMF data. “It is only the US, China and Germany which are larger than India, and if we stick to what is being planned and what is being thought through, in 2.5-3 years, we will be the third largest economy,” Mr Subrahmanyam added.

“What the tariff will be, is uncertain,” Mr. Subrahmanyam stated in response to a query regarding US President Donald Trump’s recent declaration that he wants Apple iPhones sold in the US to be made in America rather than India or any other country. We will be an inexpensive site to manufacture given the dynamics. He also said that a second round of asset monetisation pipeline is being prepared and it will be announced in August.
