Nirmala Sitharaman to Unveil 8th Consecutive Budget Amid Middle Class Expectations

With strong expectations for tax relief, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to begin her record-eighth budget presentation at 11 a.m. today. Nirmala Sitharaman will make history by being the only finance minister to present the Union Budget eight times in a row when she delivers the first comprehensive budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term in office. The Union Budget 2025 has generated significant expectations as it will be the second budget under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term.

The Union Budget 2025 will be presented paperlessly via a tablet, just like last year. Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s first full-time female Finance Minister, broke with the colonial tradition of carrying a budget briefcase and instead chose to use the traditional “bahi khata” in her first budget presentation in July 2019.

Today, February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to deliver the Union Budget for fiscal year 2025–2026. It is anticipated that the Budget 2025 presentation will begin at 11:00 a.m. today. Although she does not currently hold the record for presenting the most budgets, Nirmala Sitharaman will become the first finance minister to present the budget eight times in a row.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed both Houses of Parliament on Friday, January 31, marking the start of the Budget Session 2025. The Parliamentary Bulletin states that there will be two stages to the Budget Session: The first part of the session, which started on January 31 and ended on February 13, contains the Union Budget presentation on February 1. The second part of the session will start on March 10 and end on April 4.
