Mumbai Hit by Torrential Rains, Train Delays, Flight Diversions, and Waterlogged Roads

Mumbai Heavy rain battered Maharashtra’s capital Monday, causing traffic and aviation services to be affected and local trains to be delayed. After constant rain, heavy waterlogging was reported on railway tracks and in a number of low-lying parts of Mumbai on Monday, disrupting daily life.

On May 25, the southwest monsoon moved farther across sections of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, various parts of Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, bringing with it torrential rainfall to the city. Mumbai Division — Central Railway said that “local train services are running with cautious speed” because of the intense rainfall in the Mumbai suburbs.

According to the Mumbai Division, waterlogging between Byculla and the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) caused several local services to be short-terminated at Kurla, Dadar, and Parel. They were special trains on their way back. Services on the Harbour Line were resumed, but at a “cautious speed”.

Due to waterlogging at the Masjid station, the Central Railway announced that the Up and Down Harbour Line services between Vadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) would be temporarily suspended. Although customers complained of occasional delays, the Western Railway insisted that there was no waterlogging on its tracks and that trains were operating regularly along its route, according to a news agency.

After constant rain, massive waterlogging caused traffic to be backed up in various areas of Mumbai and its suburbs. Mumbai Central Railways said the overflow of BMC drainage lines led to high tide, causing waterlogging on the railway lines. “Efforts are being made to coordinate with BMC Corporation to resolve the issue,” it said.

Here are the latest updates on Mumbai traffic as shared by Mumbai Traffic Police on X: Due to heavy waterlogging, traffic movement is slow at Andheri Subway, Avatar Singh Bedi, Freeway South Bound, Narayan Dabholakar Road, Elphiston Bridge, Worli Naka AB Road North Bound, Band Stand Junction, JJ Bridge South Bound, Tilak Bridge (Dadar) South Bound, Hindmata Junction (Bhoiwada), King Circle Bridge (Matunga) and am Nagar Subway (Vakola) South Bound. A few trains were also rescheduled. These were: 1. Train No. 11011 CSMT – DHULE Exp 2. Train No. 12071 CSMT – HINGOLI JANSHATABDI EXPRESS. Two flights were diverted from Mumbai due to inclement weather. Here are the details: 1. Flight AIC604 Goa Mumbai diverted to Indore. 2. AIC 614 Ahmedabad to Mumbai diverted back to Ahmedabad.

Read the IndiGo advisory below: Meanwhile, Mumbai flight operations are being impacted by rain and thunderstorms, according to Air India. “We encourage our passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport to ensure a smooth travel experience,” the airline continued.

There were three windows between 7:30 and 10 am when, because of poor weather and poor visibility, there were no arrivals at the Mumbai airport for five to ten minutes. There has been a request for Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) measures. To ensure that RWY is always open, the weekly closure of the Runway (RWY) junction has been cancelled.
