MRT Music Files Copyright Case Against 3 Congress leaders

After a music company filed a copyright action against the party for playing songs from the movie KGF-2 at the Bharat Jodo Yatra, organised by party MP Rahul Gandhi, a court in Bengaluru ordered the temporary shutdown of the Congress’s Twitter account.

A complaint was made against three Congress leaders, including Mr. Gandhi, by M Naveen Kumar, the manager of MRT music, for allegedly violating copyright laws by using music from the hugely successful Kannada film KGF-2 during the Bharat Jodo (unite India) yatra that travelled through Karnataka last month before moving to neighbouring Telangana.

The Twitter handle for the Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign was also temporarily blocked by the court.

The manager of the music company said that KGF-2 songs were used in the Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign videos.

The Congress stated on Twitter that it is unaware of the court’s activities and does not possess a copy of the order. “On social media, we have read about a Bengaluru court’s unfavourable decision about the INC and BJY SM handles. We weren’t informed about or invited to any court proceedings. The order hasn’t been copied, either. We are exploring all available legal options, “Referencing the Bharat Jodo Yatra, or BJY, social media handle, the Congress party tweeted.

The music company displayed a CD on which the original copyrighted version was contrasted with the “illegally synchronised” version, according to the court’s order.

The court stated that the evidence demonstrated that the music company would be “put to irreparable loss” and that such acts could promote piracy.

According to a first information report, or FIR, submitted to the police in Bengaluru’s Yashwanthpur, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh copied popular songs from KGF-2 in two yatra videos he shared on Twitter without authorization.

The Congress has already visited Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra as part of its Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign, which is intended to set the framework for its 2024 presidential campaign.
