Morigaon District in Assam Hit by Moderate 5.0 Earthquake

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that early Thursday morning, an earthquake with a Richter scale magnitude of five rocked Assam’s Morigaon area. The earthquake struck the district’s southern bank of the Brahmaputra at a depth of 16 kilometers at approximately 2:25 in the morning, according to the seismic monitoring organization.

“EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam,” NCS posted on X. According to officials, there are currently no reports of any property damage or injuries.

The precise site of the earthquake’s epicentre is in central Assam, some 52 kilometers east of Guwahati. The shock was also felt by residents of the nearby districts of Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Kamrup Metropolitan.

On the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, the towns of Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, and Lakhimpur all experienced the tremor.

Arunachal Pradesh’s central-western region, the entirety of Meghalaya, and parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal were all affected by the earthquake. According to the report, portions of China, Bangladesh, and central-eastern Bhutan were also rocked. People were compelled to flee their houses to open spaces due to the tremor. Because the Northeastern region is located in a strong seismic zone, earthquakes frequently occur there.
