‘Mohalla Clinics Will Be Pushed Out by Arogya Mandirs,’ Claims Chief Minister

On Tuesday, Delhi’s BJP government unveiled 50 new health centres, 33 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (U-AAMs) and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the city.

Earlier, the BJP had decided to replace the popular Mohalla Clinics, started by the previous AAP government, with these new AAMs after a government audit flagged issues with how the Mohalla Clinics were working.

At the launch event in the Tis Hazari court area, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the difference between the old Mohalla Clinics and the new AAMs is like “hell and heaven.” She claimed the Mohalla Clinics lacked proper facilities, but the new AAMs will fix those gaps.

Gupta also mentioned that the central government had allocated ₹2,400 crore for Delhi’s health services, but the previous government never used it. The current BJP-led government is now using that money to build over 1,100 AAMs, with plans to open them all by March 2026.

She added that wherever the new AAMs open, the Mohalla Clinics will be phased out.

These new centres will offer everything from doctor consultations and medicines to tests, vaccinations for pregnant women, mental health help, elderly care, and support for health programs like TB elimination.

Alongside this, 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened inside hospitals, offering affordable medicines and medical supplies at big discounts up to 80% cheaper than usual prices.

But the opposition isn’t convinced. AAP Delhi leader Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the BJP of just repainting old Mohalla Clinics and renaming them as new AAMs, rather than actually building new centres. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said the BJP’s changes are just superficial — fresh paint and new names, but no real improvement.
