Microsoft to Lay Off Over 9,000 Employees, Marking Second Major Purge in Months

Microsoft is planning to lay off approximately 4% of its global workforce, which amounts to about 9,100 employees, according to a report by the Seattle Times on Wednesday. This move marks the company’s largest round of job cuts since last year.

As of June 2024, Microsoft employed around 228,000 people worldwide. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the layoffs.

Earlier reports in June suggested that Microsoft intended to reduce staff mainly in its sales division, as part of a broader effort to cut costs and improve efficiency. This announcement follows a previous round of layoffs in May, when about 6,000 employees were let go.

The layoffs at Microsoft are part of a wider trend across many major American companies, which have been trimming their workforces in response to economic uncertainty. Many businesses are looking to streamline their operations and reduce expenses, continuing a pattern of job cuts that began last year.
