On Friday, about a week after a tribal girl’s body was discovered in a local pond, violent demonstrations broke out once more in Kaliaganj, West Bengal. She was allegedly raped and murdered, and the villagers are calling for justice.
Following a police raid on Wednesday night, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that one of its members was killed in Kaliaganj. Both the boy and the girl were from the Rajbongshi community.
Due to the tragic deaths of the two members of the tribal Rajbongshi community, the party has called for a 12-hour bandh in North Bengal on Friday.
During the bandh, BJP supporters and West Bengal Police officers engaged in fights in numerous North Bengal locations.
Last Saturday, the body of the Rajbongshi girl was discovered in Kaliaganj in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district. One of North Bengal’s seven districts is called Uttar Dinajpur.
Due to the bandh, the majority of businesses and marketplaces in North Dinajpur were closed, and public transport was suspended. Alipurdwar, Cooch Behar, and Malda were hit by the 12-hour bandh in North Bengal on a daily basis.
In Siliguri, the band call had some impact.
With the exception of Darjeeling, most of the districts in North Bengal responded to the band that the BJP called. All of Darjeeling’s markets were open for business, and the city’s transport systems were in operation.
Additionally, the protesters burned tyres to block some of Malda’s roads.
Bengal Police detained BJP members who were protesting the death of the Kaliaganj girl and the murder of Mritunjay Burman, a member of the party, in North Dinajpur.
On April 27, at 2.30 am, Bengal police allegedly conducted a search on the home of Bishnu Barman, a member of the BJP Panchayat Samiti. The party said that after the raid, police shot and killed the 33-year-old.
The bandh was organised, according to the BJP, to protest “police brutality” in West Bengal, which it said was the result of the alleged murder of a party worker who belonged to the Rajbongshi community.
Debasree Choudhury, a BJP leader, declared: “After observing the situation here, we have asked for a bandh. The purported murder of a BJP employee was an extremely terrible incident. Attacks on the Rajbangshi people are ongoing, proving the TMC’s animus towards them.
North Bengal, where the saffron party did well in the most recent Lok Sabha elections, was the target of a 12-hour bandh that the BJP of West Bengal had called for.
However, fewer people travelled in a few government buses during the bandh. Due to the absence of private commercial vehicles on the highways, office goers encountered difficulties.
The BJP claims that Bengal police killed a tribal youth in Kaliaganj.
On Saturday, violence broke out in Kaliaganj, West Bengal, following reports of the suspected rape and murder of a young Rajbongshi girl. In videos, police officers can be seen dragging the victim’s body along the street.
The victim’s body was later discovered by residents in Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district, where the alleged crime was allegedly committed on Friday.
A week later, Mrityunjay Barman, a tribal youth from the Rajbongshi clan, was killed in Kaliaganj, allegedly by state police.
