The transgender activist Gauri Sawant will be played by Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen in the film Taali. The series’ motion poster, which shows Sushmita in an avatar that has never been seen before, was released by the creators on Friday.
The caption read, “Laakh gira de bijli mujhpe, mai toh satrang banu. #HappyPride.”
With a third gender tick box that includes a bindi, the motion poster is distinctive and inclusive. Sushmita Sen’s prominent forehead and her imposing eyes give away the dramatic story that awaiting the audience. It can be heard Sushmita saying, “Main taali bajati nahi bajwati hoon.”
JioCinema will air the Ravi Jadhav-directed film Taali.
A few months ago, Sushmita Sen posted a video to her Instagram account marking the completion of the series’ filming. Thanking the director, the actor said, “Thank you @ravijadhavofficial for being one of the calmest & most Humane Directors I’ve ever worked with…the direction team led by Amol…gratitude.”
Gauri Sawant, also known as Ganesh, was one of the petitioners in the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) case and had a significant impact on the outcome. The 2013 lawsuit resulted in the Supreme Court’s ultimate decision, which recognised transgender people as the third gender in 2014.
