‘Maha needs a complete lockdown,’ says cabinet minister

Vijay Wadettiwar, Disaster Management minister of Maharashtra has proposed a complete lockdown in view of rise in Covid-19 cases and coming festivals in a virtual meeting earlier on Friday. In an interview he said that it is very important to shutdown all shops and public places to reduce the rising Covid cases. Although the final call will be taken by Maha CM Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday during all party meeting.

He further said “Every day we are witnessing 50 to 60 thousand cases. We have 5.31 lakh active cases today. If the upsurge continues like this, we will have more than 10 lakh active cases soon”.

“If we have to break the chain, it’s not possible keeping half the shops and establishments open. In the virtual conference that took place today, I have suggested a strict lockdown of three weeks to break the chain” said by Mr Vijay Wadettiwar.

Minister said it is possible to see crowds in vegetable markets even on weekend lockdowns “There should be provision to supply vegetable and groceries at homes. I have expressed my opinion. I think this decision needs to be taken at the earliest,”
He has also expressed his hope that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey will give his assent for his opinion.

At present, Maharashtra is the worst-affected state in India by the pandemic. Yesterday, the state reported 56,286 new cases of Covid-19 and also reported 376 new Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, taking the total death toll till now to 57,028.
