The design of phase 2 of Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro line-5 has been changed by making a portion of it underground. This comes after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) faced disagreement from the locals as they were being affected by the venture between the Bhiwandi and Temghar region.
“Between Bhiwandi and Kalyan, the part of the metro alignment runs through Bhiwandi, Temghar, Rajnouli, Gonve Gaon, Kon Gaon, Lal Chowki, Kalyan and Kalyan APMC. The entire corridor will be elevated except for the portion between Temghar and Bhiwandi,” a source said. Now it is concluded, number of those affected will eventually decline if the portion of the metro line is underground.
The modification for Line-5 (Orange Line) has been sent by the MMRDA to the Maharashtra government for agreement and permission. With the modified plan, there will be eight metro stations – seven elevated and one underground, in the second stage. The primary stage among Thane and Bhiwandi has nine stations.
At Dhamankar Naka-Temghar, the underground part will be of 3.5km and then will be raised for the rest 9.67km up to Kalyan railway station and the Kalyan APMC.
Presently, the MMRDA has started the procedure to choose a consultant for Stage II, following which it will welcome proposals for civil works. The all out assessed cost for the two stages together is around Rs8,416 crore. Up to this point, around 60% of civil works among Thane and Bhiwandi have been finished.
