‘Laila Majnu’ Surpasses Original Lifetime Earnings in 4 Days, Sets New Box Office Record

The romance drama Laila Majnu has finally found happiness beyond the mountains, six years after it was first released. In just four days since its big-screen rerelease last Friday, the movie has already surpassed its initial run of ticket sales.

In 2018, the film Laila Majnu, starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri, was a box office failure. Sajid Ali directed the movie, and his brother Imtiaz Ali presented it. Even though the movie only made slightly over Rs 2 crore at the box office, it went on to become a cult classic because to praise for its acting, script, and soundtrack.

Journalist Himesh Mankad claims that the film’s re-release, which was only shown on 75 screens, had an opening of Rs 30 lakh before seeing a significant uptick on Saturday when it brought in Rs 70 lakh. With its earnings of Rs 1 crore on Sunday, it made a total of Rs 2 crore for the weekend, more than its inaugural weekend’s Rs 1.51 cr.

On day four, Laila Majnu kept up her strong pace, collecting Rs 60 lakh on Monday. The movie has surpassed its initial run of Rs 2.15 cr with its four-day revenues presently standing at Rs 2.6 cr.

Now, Laila Majnu will only have two days to herself before the week’s biggest new releases take over. These include Sharaddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2, Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, and the John Abraham starrer Vedaa.

The release of three new films on 15 August may hurt Laila Majnu’s exposure, but given how well it did over the weekend, the movie should pick up steam again. The trade also says that after the big holiday weekend, it will likely continue to play in fewer theatres.

Triptii Dimri disclosed at the movie’s re-release press conference that both of the newcomers were devastated when the movie didn’t catch on, and Avinash Tiwary talked about how, three days later, when he went to see the movie with his parents, its “posters were being pulled down.”

“Once the film was done and it didn’t do well, I just wanted to run away from the idea of Laila Majnu and all of that. I just didn’t want to look at that side because it would give me some pain. I would think on the lines from the film, ‘jhoot hai tumhari duniya,’ and today I think, it is true, there is that pure world beyond the mountains. I feel vindicated today as am sure many do,” he had said. Laila Majnu was co-produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor and Preety Ali.
