Kerala Braces for Heavy Rain, IMD Issues Red Alert in Eight Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised the state’s rainfall alert level on Friday, May 30, 2025, by placing eight districts on red alert for very high rainfall (more than 20 cm in a 24-hour period), as the state’s districts continue to be battered by heavy rainfall.

The IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram raised the alert level in their meteorological report at 1 p.m. Red alerts are in effect for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Due to isolated heavy to very heavy rains, all six of the remaining districts are under an orange alert. Earlier Friday morning, there were only three districts under red alert: Kannur, Kasaragod, and Idukki.

Due to sporadic, intense rains, the Lakshadweep Islands are still under a yellow alert on Friday. According to current forecasts, most districts should see a taper off in rainfall following Saturday, May 31. On Saturday, only sporadic heavy rainfall is anticipated over all 14 districts. According to the most recent estimate, several northern districts are also expected to have isolated, severe rains through at least June 3.

According to the IMD, there has been “significant excess” rainfall in the Kerala and Mahe regions over the last week. The region received 287.1 mm, 451% less than the typical amount of 52.1 mm for a one-week period, as per the IMD’s extended range projection for the next two weeks.

In contrast to the customary date of June 1, the southwest monsoon arrived over Kerala on May 24. Rainfall over 60% of the average for a specific time period is referred to as “large excess” in IMD terminology. Kerala received a significant amount of extra rainfall in every district. The IMD stated that Mahe and Lakshadweep also saw significant excess rainfall. During the next 12 hours, the deep depression over the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh is expected to progressively diminish into a depression, and over the next 24 hours, it will likely become a well defined low pressure system.
