Justice Varma Refuses to Step Down Despite CJI’s Request; SC Shares Findings with Top Leadership

According to reports, CJI Sanjiv Khanna requested Justice Yashwant Varma’s resignation after a three-member panel found validity in the claims that cash was discovered at his home. Justice Varma, however, refused. The three-member probe panel’s report and Justice Varma’s response have now been sent by the CJI to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Murmu.

An official release Thursday said that the CJI, “in terms of the In-House Procedure, has written to” both President and PM “enclosing therewith copy of the 3-Member Committee report dated 03.05.2025 along with the letter/response dated 06.05.2025 received from Mr Justice Yashwant Varma.”

In order to investigate the claims of cash recovery following a fire at the former Delhi High Court judge’s home, the CJI established a committee on March 22 that included Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab & Haryana; Justice G S Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh; and Justices Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka.

On March 20, Justice Varma was transferred, and on April 5, he was sworn in as a judge in the Allahabad High Court. On May 4, following the committee’s submission, CJI Khanna sent a copy of the report to Justice Varma. According to what has been learnt, the CJI offered Justice Verma the opportunity to quit before the report was released.
