On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the Delhi High Court postponed the suspension of multiple students for demonstrating on the university campus without prior authorization. The High Court instructed the institution to provide a report and mandated the formation of a panel to settle the matter under the direction of the vice chancellor.
One of the 17 students at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) pleaded with the court to overturn her suspension. Earlier this month, the students were punished for “defacing public property” and “protesting without prior permission.” Over the next few days, more students are anticipated to petition the court on their own to have their suspensions revoked.
On December 14, 2024, the fifth anniversary of clashes between anti-CAA protesters and police on the JMI campus, four PhD scholars were suspended for holding a demonstration. The students have been protesting against the university’s order prohibiting protests and meetings without permission.
