The offshoot subtype XBB.1.16 mutated from another variant XBB.1.16 has been detected in India. Total 113 cases infected from this subtype have been found across the country with Maharashtra and Gujarat registering the most cases.
In last 15 months, around 400 new subtypes of Omicron variant have been found in India and this XBB belongs to the class of Omicron variants.
90% of all the Omicron variants are XBB.
The INSACOG portal has yet not registered the XBB.1.16.1.
However, there is no proof that the new subtype has any severity.
The symptoms to this XBB.1.16 are almost similar to that of Omicron which include runny nose, body ache, strain-fever, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhoea, headache and cold.
Patients suffering from the new variant are mostly being treated at their homes.
