India Opens About Lack Of Commitment By Sri Lanka Over Tamil Minority Issue At UNHRC

India underlined its concern on Monday over the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to finding a political solution to the Tamil problem but the lack of any discernible progress.

The Indian delegation said it “notes with concern the lack of measurable progress by Govt of Sri Lanka on their commitments of a political solution to ethnic issue” during the interactive dialogue on OHCHR’s report on promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka at the 51st session of the Human Rights Council.

According to India, it has consistently supported a political solution within the framework of a united Sri Lanka that would guarantee justice, peace, equality, and the dignity of the Tamil population there.

It said that Sri Lanka’s current crisis has shown the drawbacks of a debt-driven economy and how they affect people’s quality of life.

India went on to say that it is in Sri Lanka’s best interests to increase citizen capacity and strive toward their empowerment, both of which need the devolution of power to the local level.

A senior UNHRC official advised Sri Lanka to build institutions and advance human rights in order to address the humanitarian issues brought on by its greatest financial crisis in seven decades.

According to Nada Al-Nashif, the UN’s acting high commissioner for human rights, UN member states and international financial institutions should assist Sri Lanka as it works to help millions of people who are battling with food, fuel, power, and pharmaceutical shortages.

She also encouraged Sri Lanka’s new administration, headed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, to stop arresting protest leaders who were instrumental in the ouster of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July by using security regulations.
